The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
