English midfielder Jordan Henderson reveals he has experienced "challenging moments" since departing from Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and acknowledges he might "have made different decisions".

The 35-year-old was widely criticized for leaving Liverpool in 2023 to sign with Al-Ettifaq in a nation where LGBTQ+ relationships are against the law.

Henderson had been known as a high-profile champion of LGBTQ+ rights and said sorry for upsetting or hurting anyone in the community members when he exited Saudi Arabia to sign with Ajax half a year after.

England Career and Thoughts

Henderson missed out on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but has returned to the Premier League with Brentford and England's selection under Thomas Tuchel.

"I don't think it was the factor why I didn't make the Euros," Henderson commented. "While I was in Saudi I feel I was in all the squads prior to the Euros."

"Timing-wise, with all things in hindsight, yes - perhaps I would have taken different decisions."

"But at the period that's how I believed and the decision I made was for various reasons and I alone know the rationale."

Emotional Struggles

"Honestly speaking, over the past two years I have had some tough moments. It was similar to a separation when I left Liverpool."

"Certainly I'm not flawless and I've made mistakes in the past. Of course I will have over my career."

"However all I've ever sought to do is the proper thing."

International Career

Henderson has won 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.

He is in Tuchel's squad to compete against Wales and Latvia this week and thinks he still has much to provide on the pitch.

"The crucial people are the head coach, the technical staff and the players and what they feel," said Henderson.

"Inquire with them what they believe, if I am a cheerleader when I am here. I don't believe one of the top managers in Europe would be picking me just to do that."
