{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, track officials were informed and put on alert to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
