Egypt's Diplomatic Chief Calls On the Palestinian Group to Accept the US Gaza Peace Plan and Disarm
Cairo and Doha are currently engaged in efforts to persuade Hamas to accept the former US president's proposal to end the hostilities in the Gaza Strip, according to the Egyptian foreign minister.
Growing Pressure on Hamas
Badr Abdelatty emphasized that the time had come for the organization to lay down its weapons and avoid providing Israeli forces any pretext to prolong its offensive in the region, where numerous civilians were killed on Friday.
“Let’s not give any excuse for one party to use Hamas as a pretext for this mad daily killings of civilians. What’s happening is far beyond the 7th of October,” Abdelatty said.
He added that Egypt is “in close contact with Qatar and Turkey to persuade Hamas to agree to the terms”.
Details of the Peace Plan
The plan would demand Hamas to:
- Lay down its arms and withdraw from political activities
- Hand over the captives in custody from the 2023 attack, including two dozen are thought to survive
In exchange, Israel would:
- Pull back its troops from the territory
- Succeeded by an international force
- Accept a transitional authority under the former president
Observers believe that the proposal would lead to the dissolution of Hamas’s identity as an fighting force, while the Israeli side would give little ground.
Internal Divisions within Hamas
Hamas is divided over how to respond, with factions requesting more time to evaluate the proposal.
The head of Hamas’s military wing has opposed the proposal, considering it a move to eradicate Hamas whether or not they accept.
Those familiar with the matter report that Hamas is likely to propose amendments regarding:
- Weapons surrender
- Remaining troops of military in Gaza
- Guarantees that the Hamas leaders will not be pursued
Civilian Suffering Deteriorates
Israeli forces carried on its military actions in Gaza City and airstrikes across the territory on the recent day, fatally striking two dozen individuals.
Eleven of the victims were in Gaza City, while the others were killed in southern Gaza, including three in an unmanned aircraft attack in al-Masawi, which had been earlier labeled a protected space.
Israel issued its ultimate directive for Gaza City on earlier this week, with the defence minister stating that individuals left would be labeled as militants, a classification that violates global norms.
Numerous of civilians remain unable to leave in the city, including those who are unable to pay for the evacuation to the south, which is said to cost a significant sum.
“Countless individuals are forced to sleep outdoors while seeking refuge,” stated Sarah Davies.
The UN reported that there is nowhere secure for those escaping the city, as locations declared as secure areas in the south are lethal.
A UNICEF spokesperson called the notion of a safe zone as “unrealistic”, stating that airstrikes are used with “chilling predictability” and educational buildings designated as temporary shelters are frequently demolished.
Hospitals under Severe Strain
Hospitals in southern Gaza are stretched to the limit, with the aid clinic treating more than double its normal limits.
Recently, a major medical facility received the remains of 27 individuals of people fatally wounded by the troops.
The head of paediatrics described the circumstances as “exceptionally challenging”.
Israel has been reported as striking doctors and clinics, with a nurse said to be taken while heading to her job in a southern city.
Israel has often stated that arrested medical officials had ties to Hamas, though without providing evidence.
Total casualties from hostilities in Gaza has reached over 62,000 civilians dead and approximately 170,000 hurt, as reported by the medical sources.
